The Ministry of Culture of Taiwan, through the Books from Taiwan programme, and the Economic and Cultural Office of Taipei in Spain present in Madrid the book entitled Black Ghost Siraya. Stories from Taiwan, by Taiwanese writer Miao-Yi Tu, translated into Spanish.

The writer Miao-Yi Tu will have a first meeting with the public on Sunday 4 June at 10.30 am at the International Book Fair in Madrid, in the Parque del Retiro, at the stand of the Cuadernos del Laberinto publishing house, where she will sign her copies translated into Spanish.

The book presentation event will take place at the Mario Vargas Llosa Municipal Library (Calle Barceló 4, Madrid), on Monday 5 June at 18.30 with free admission until full capacity is reached.

Miao-Yi Tu (Taiwan, 1961) is a writer, poet and painter. She has a degree in Literature from the National Chung-Hsing University of Taichung (Taiwan), and a master’s degree from the Dharma Realm Buddhist University in California, USA. She has published essays such as The Earth Is Still the Garden; poems such as Longing, The Standing Epiphany and The Black Ghost; and documentaries such as Sakura’s Ruby and The Golden Bat.

The author is a descendant of the Siraya people, a native population of Taiwan. She is a well-known environmental activist who has fought for the protection of the Takao Hill Nature Reserve in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. She has devoted more than three decades of her life to the cultural study of her people in a conscious search for herself through the knowledge of her origins.

In her narrative, readers will encounter spirits and ancestral beings who will reveal to the reader the chronicles of her land. Through legend that becomes reality, the author shares with us diverse stories told mostly by women from a matrilineal society in which daughters inherited land through the maternal line from generation to generation to sustain their community.
