Tomorrow Wednesday at 12 noon, the Foro Cultural Austriaco and the Museo la Neomudéjar in Madrid (Calle Antonio Nebrija, s/n) present the exhibition Global 500-Lois Fasching, at the Museum’s headquarters, as part of the programme for the 500th anniversary of Magellan’s circumnavigation of the world.

The Tyrolean sculptor Alois Fasching has been inspired by Ferdinand Magellan’s first circumnavigation of the world to survey the beginnings of Europe’s colonial past, in the cycle entitled Global 500.

The exhibition was first presented in 2022 at the Landesmuseum Schloss Tirol, then in Brussels, and now finally arrives at the La Neomudéjar museum in Madrid. The cycle is based on Ferdinand Magellan’s famous expedition to the Spice Islands between 1519 and 1522, in which he circumnavigated the Earth for the first time. A maritime quantum leap of enormous audacity, but also the beginning of Europe’s colonial past.

In the centre, the chronicler Pigafetta and Juan Sebastián Elcano as executors of the expedition; Jakob Fugger in eye contact with Emperor Charles V and Pope Leo X, with his oversized miter obstructing the view… It may look like a simple collection of sculptures, but in reality it is a provocation. The protagonists, taken out of their historical context, transport visitors back to their own present. On the wall, objects in black and white. In five parts, the first route around the globe in ash and charcoal technique on aluminium. Magellan’s five ships, including the Nao Victoria, the only one to return with the first 18 people to circumnavigate the globe.
