The Philippine Ambassador to Spain, Philippe J. Lhuillier, has informed the family of Diego Bello, a native of A Coruña who was shot dead by Philippine police officers in January 2020, that the three officers who were under a warrant for their arrest and imprisonment without bail for the alleged murder have surrendered at police stations in Manila.
Philippe J. Lhuillier told the family that the officers voluntarily turned themselves in to the Philippine National Police Criminal Investigation Group, and conveyed to the family his hope that “justice will be done for Diego”.
The court in charge of the case has ordered the three policemen, Vicente Panuelos, Ronel Azarcón and Nido Boy Esmeralda, to be remanded without bail, given the seriousness of the prosecution’s case, which accuses them of having murdered Diego and of having prepared false evidence to accuse him of drug trafficking. The judge in charge of the case has ordered a hearing by videoconference with the parties to be held on 1 March.
