For four Saturdays from 14 January, Teatro del Barrio presents the play Italianeses, by Saverio La Ruina, one of the most important Italian playwrights of recent decades, performed by Riccardo Rigamonti. The play explores the concept of identity in refugees and migrants, and does so through the eyes and voice of one of the author’s great characters: Tonino Cantisani.
Born in 1951 in an Albanian concentration camp to an Albanian mother and an Italian father, Tonino’s character is locked up in the camp until he is well into his forties, after the regime of the Albanian dictator Enver Hoxha denies him and his mother the possibility of entering Italy. The absence of the father is the central leitmotif of the show. Tonino’s life is marked by nostalgia for a father he knows little about and the fictitious image he has made of him. In addition, with a light, poetic tone and a candid look, Tonino also talks about his passion for fabrics or his love for a young girl in the countryside. Tickets can be purchased at this link.
