As part of the programme ‘Remembering…’, and on the occasion of Cuban Culture Day, Casa América is screening this evening at 7pm in its Iberia hall the film El Mayor, directed in 2019 by Rigoberto López. Free admission.
Starring Daniel Romero, Claudia Tomás and Rafael Lahera in the leading roles, El Mayor is based on real events. Inspired by the life of Major General Ignacio Agramonte Loynaz (1841-1873), one of the great political and military leaders of Cuba’s war for independence. He was defined by his loyalty to the revolution and to his comrades-in-arms. He faced contradictions and successes, and a tenacious struggle with himself, the most intense of his polemics. In narrating his epic, the film delves into relevant events that forged the Cuban nation.
The filmography of director and screenwriter Rigoberto López (Cuba, 1947-2019) includes more than twenty works, mainly as a documentary filmmaker. Highlights include Granada, el despegue de un sueño (1983), El viaje más largo (1993) and one of the most notable Ibero-American documentaries, Yo soy del son a la salsa (1996). In 2003 he directed his first fiction feature Roble de olor (2003). El Mayor was his last work.
