Spain has congratulated the Angolan government and its president, Joao Lourenço, on his victory in the August 24 general elections, after the country’s Constitutional Court rejected a petition filed by the main opposition party, the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), to annul the election results.
In a statement issued on Friday night, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it congratulated “the people and Government of Angola on the holding of the elections “which took place in a peaceful and normal atmosphere”, the results of which “were validated yesterday by the Constitutional Court” of this country.
The Spanish Executive expresses “its firm will to continue working” with the new government formed by President Joâo Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço and, in this way, to continue “promoting the close bilateral relations of friendship and cooperation that unite” Spain and Angola, which it has described as a “friendly people”.
Angola’s Constitutional Court rejected the petition presented by the main opposition party, the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), to annul the results of the general elections held on 24 August, in which the government’s Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) won with 51 percent of the vote.
