The diplomat José Luis García Galán is the new Deputy Director General for Mercosur Countries and Ibero-American Multilateral Organisations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, replacing Enrique Yturriaga, recently appointed Director General for Ibero-America and the Caribbean.

José Luis García Galán entered the diplomatic service in 1994 and until now was assigned as an advisor to the Secretary of State for the EU, after having been a parliamentary advisor in the Cabinet of the previous Minister of Foreign Affairs, Arancha González Laya.

Previously, he held second posts at the Spanish embassies in China, Cameroon and Bolivia, and was also consul in Bogotá and counsellor at the embassy in Berlin.

In Madrid, he was also a member of the Presidency of the Government from 2005 to 2007 and Deputy Director General for the Pacific, Southeast Asia and the Philippines from 2007 to 2009, and Deputy Director General for Continental Asia from 2009 to 2010.
