The Council of Ministers yesterday approved the appointment of Spain’s new ambassadors to the Czech Republic, Romania and Latvia, as well as ambassadors on Special Mission for Migratory Affairs, the Sahel, Peacekeeping Operations and Digital Transformation.
As advanced by The Diplomat, the new ambassador in Prague will be Alberto Moreno, a diplomat who ran as a candidate of Podemos for mayor of Majadahonda and who was until now consul general in Marseille. A member of the diplomatic career since 1985, he holds a degree in Information Sciences and has been ambassador to Andorra. He has been posted to the Embassies of Angola, Luxembourg, Andorra and the Permanent Representation to the EU.
Meanwhile, as The Diplomat also reported, José Antonio Hernández Pérez-Solórzano, currently consul general in Havana, has been appointed ambassador to Bucharest. A graduate in law and a diplomat since 1990, he was, among other posts, deputy director general for Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. He has also been posted to Luxembourg, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Egypt and Morocco.
The new ambassador in Riga will be Manuel Alhama Orenes, who for the past six years has been deputy director general for International Relations, Immigration and Foreigners in the Ministry of the Interior. A diplomat since 2004, he holds a degree in Law and Political Science and Sociology and has been posted to Haiti, Luxembourg and Geneva, where he was an advisor to the UN Human Rights Council when Spain was a member (2010-2013).
The Government also approved the appointment of Felipe de la Morena as ambassador to Cambodia, with multiple accreditation from Thailand. De la Morena has been ambassador to Malta and was coordinator at the Permanent Representation of Spain to the European Union in Brussels.
The Council of Ministers also approved the appointment of four new ambassadors on Special Mission. The new head of migration affairs will be María Dolores Ríos Peset, who was ambassador to Cape Verde and has been posted to Bolivia, Colombia, Namibia, Paraguay, Mexico and Ecuador.
For his part, the new ambassador on special mission for the Sahel will be Antonio Sánchez-Benedito, who already held this post between 2013 and 2014 and was until now EU ambassador to Mozambique. Among other posts, he has been permanent representative to the African Union as well as deputy director general for Sub-Saharan Africa and ambassador to Ethiopia.
Fernando Curcio Ruigómez, until now Ambassador to New Zealand, will be Ambassador-at-Large for Peacekeeping Operations. Previously, he was ambassador to Vietnam as well as director general of Fisheries Resources and Aquaculture at the Ministry of the Environment between 2004 and 2009.
Finally, the government appointed José Miguel Corvinos Lafuente, until now ambassador to Malaysia, as ambassador-at-large for Digital Transformation in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He has been posted in Russia, Honduras and France, among others, and was also director general of Fisheries Resources and Aquaculture at the Ministry of Agriculture between 2015-2017.
