Foreign Ministry condemns anti-Semitic attacks in Castrillo Mota de Judíos

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed yesterday, through its Twitter account, its “condemnation of the serious anti-Semitic attacks” suffered by Castrillo de Mota de Judíos, in the province of Burgos.

The Burgalese town of Castrillo Mota de Judíos dawned with anti-Semitic graffiti and the burning of several containers, according to a statement issued by its mayor, Lorenzo Rodríguez.

The graffiti have appeared in various parts of the town, such as road signs and walls near the future Centre of Sephardic Memory, which is currently under construction.

In 2014, the villagers decided to change the name of the municipality from Castrillo Matajudíos to Castrillo Mota de Judíos.

“The aggressors have crossed a red line,” complained the mayor, because they could have “caused a tragedy”, reports Europa Press.

Rodríguez explained that the perpetrators have repeated actions of this type, the last one a year and a half ago, and this is the seventh time that similar attacks have occurred.

The mayor acknowledged that, on this occasion, “the prompt intervention and the immediate fight of the neighbours has prevented a tragedy” because the fire could have reached the houses “in these hot times”.

This task “for the recovery of Jewish memory” that was undertaken years ago “carries a lot of responsibility”, he added, while indicating that actions of this type can cause “the people to become afraid” and rethink their “fight against anti-Semitic attacks”.

The Federation of Jewish Communities of Spain (FCJE) has shown its solidarity with the inhabitants of the place and urges the competent authorities to take extreme preventive measures to avoid these incidents and to identify the perpetrators “who repeatedly” attack Castrillo Mota de Judíos.
