As part of the celebration of the 26th edition of the Spain-United States Forum in Bilbao, the Fundación Consejo España-EE.UU. pays tribute to the figure of Diego Mª de Gardoqui y Arriquibar (Bilbao, 1735 – Turin, 1798), merchant, diplomat and first representative of the Spanish Crown in the newborn United States of America.
The video, which can be seen at this link, features the writer and academic, Reyes Calderón; the Spanish ambassador and writer, Eduardo Garrigues; the specialist in diplomacy and international relations, Salvador Otamendi; and the historian and expert on Spain’s role in the American War of Independence, Thomas E. Chávez. An exciting journey into the past and the dissemination of the little-known history of this universal Bilbao native, an essential figure in the materialisation of Spanish aid to the revolutionary cause.
