The Instituto Cultural Rumano of Madrid, in collaboration with the Romanian Embassy, is taking part, with its own stand (number 3), in the 81st edition of the Madrid Book Fair, which runs until 12 June 2022.
At the stand it will be possible to find and buy an impressive number of books by Romanian authors published in Spain in recent years, as well as a selection of titles in Romanian. On Friday 3 June, 6.30 p.m. at the Community of Madrid Pavilion of the Fair, there will be a meeting with Gabriela Adameșteanu, where her book Vidas provisionales (Provisional Lives) will be presented.
The programme of activities, literary events and book signings at the ICR stand can be viewed at this link.
Gabriela Adamesteanu’s Provisional Lives tells the story of how it is not easy to maintain an extramarital relationship if you are a civil servant in a cultural institution in 1970s Romania. Under Ceauscescu’s yoke, when government control pervades everything, Sorin is looking for love, and Letitia for an escape valve from her disappointing married life. In their clandestine encounters, both fantasise in vain about leaving behind the rigours of the regime and the fear that the true origins of their families will be discovered, which would compromise their position in the Party. Gabriela Adamesteanu plunges us into the delirious universe of communist Romania and, with extraordinary skill, delves into the poignant fate of her protagonists, who are doomed to betrayal and lies.
