The Diplomat
Luis Guillermo Plata, Colombia’s new ambassador to Spain, presented his Copias de Estilo on Monday to the Foreign Ministry’s Ambassadors’ Introducer, Caridad Batalla.
According to the website of the Colombian Embassy, the new ambassador, who must still wait to present his Letters of Credence to the King, commented on the priorities that the President of Colombia, Iván Duque, has entrusted him with in order to deepen the relationship between the two countries: economic recovery, political dialogue at the highest level, attracting investment in strategic sectors and deepening judicial cooperation.
Plata, who received her appointment three weeks ago from Duque, will fill the vacancy left by the resignation of the previous Colombian ambassador in Madrid, Carolina Barco, who had only been in the post for two years.
On handing over her appointment, Iván Duque indicated that he entrusted her with, among other tasks, “working to strengthen cultural and commercial relations, and to attract more investment in sectors such as tourism, ICT and renewable energies”.
Since 21 March last year, Luis Guillermo Plata has held, by direct appointment of the President of Colombia, the position of manager for the comprehensive care of the pandemic in the country, with the mission of articulating the response of state agencies to the COVID-19 emergency.
Previously, he led the negotiation of the Free Trade Agreement between Colombia and the European Union and was Minister of Trade, Industry and Tourism between 2007 and 2010, during the government of Álvaro Uribe.
