Belief and Burlesque, Tunisian cinema at the Institut Français

As part of the series Humour in African Cinemas, the Instituto Francés in Madrid is screening two films this evening at 8pm: Les pastèques du cheikh (in the photo), by Kaouther Ben Hania, and Le Challat de Tunis, by Kaouther Ben Hania. Screening in the original version with Spanish subtitles.

In the first of these, Sheikh Tasher is a pious and respected imam. He agrees to pray for the body of a woman he did not know, but this act of piety will become the sin that will allow Hamid, his Machiavellian and ambitious assistant, to undermine his power. The second projection takes place in Tunisia before the revolution. A biker, knife in hand, runs through the streets of the city slicing the buttocks of the women. They call him “Le Challat” (The Razor), and just mentioning his name is enough to arouse terror and fascination. Event organised in collaboration with the Al-Tarab association and the Tarifa/Tanger African Film Festival (FCAT). Bookings on this link.
