The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, was rebuked yesterday by a member of the CDR fled to Belgium while intervening in an event organized by the Catalan Civil Society in Brussels for the 40th anniversary of the Constitution.
“I am delighted to be invited by this far-right organization, and since I am a far-right hooligan, where would I go?” The minister said ironically during the ceremony. In a moment of the speech, and just when he referred to the application of Article 155 in Catalonia, Borrell was interrupted by a member of the CDR, Adriá Carrasco, who began to shout that “the Constitution is a sham”, after which he was expelled from the room between the public’s rebuke.
After the incident, Borrell continued his speech, in which he stated that “abroad, part of the public believes the nationalist narrative. That is why it is so important to tell the truth. “He also recalled that” the Constitution had more than 90% support in Catalonia, while in no electoral convocation made with guarantees the supporters of secession have exceeded 50% of votes”.
According to Borrell, Spain experienced in 2017 the “greatest institutional crisis of democracy” because of a “programmed attempt to subvert the constitutional order”. “For them the Catalan people are composed only of those who are in favor of independence, and if not, you are a traitor, and against that you have to fight”, he added.
In the same act they intervened the leader of the PP in the European Parliament, Esteban González Pons; Iratxe García, of the PSOE; the speaker of Cs in the Congress, Juan Carlos Girauta; and the president of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani.
