The Spanish government considers “null and void” the “elections” held yesterday in the Ukrainian separatist regions of Donetsk and Lugansk, in the east of the country, in which the Russia-backed leaders of both self-proclaimed republics have been reelected in their positions.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says in a statement that the “elections” constitute “a step back” in the resolution of the conflict in the East of Ukraine and represent “a violation of the Minsk Agreements”, which provide for the celebration of local elections within the framework of Ukrainian legislation and under OSCE electoral observation standards.
The Foreign Ministry reminds that Spain has always been firm in the defense of the principle of sovereignty and territorial integrity of the State, as guarantee of stability in international relations.
