The Council of Ministers yesterday approved the granting of Spanish citizenship by letter of nature to the Venezuelan opposition MP Luis Florido and to the defense attorney for Human Rights in Venezuela, Tamara Suju. He also granted it to the conductor Gerardo Estrada and the businessman Alexis Xavier Lope-Bello.

Florido Barreto, a deputy for Voluntad Popular, is one of the opponents who, last July, filed a complaint with the Venezuelan Prosecutor’s Office against President Nicolás Maduro for allegedly committing corruption during the electoral campaign. Due to this, he has seen his ability to act and his freedom of movement to enter and leave Venezuela restricted. He has family ties with Spain, where his wife and children are from.

Tamara Suju is a criminal lawyer and recognized defender of human rights in Venezuela where she has founded several non-governmental organizations for the defense of people imprisoned and tortured for political reasons. He has three children of Spanish nationality, two of whom live in Spain.

Alexis Xavier Lope-Bello is a businessman specialized in the development of innovative technologies. He is currently president of Comtrade, one of the most important technology companies in southern Europe and intends to launch in our country, where he lives part of his family, a business initiative for the promotion of youth employment and employment of students of technology.

Finally, Gerardo Estrada is a violinist and orchestra conductor known and internationally awarded. He has a special relationship with our country where he has received training and has performed on numerous occasions as guest conductor in orchestras and festivals.
