The president of the European Commission, Jean Claude Juncker, proposed yesterday in the State of the Union debate at the European Parliament, to increase the size of the permanent body of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (formerly Frontex) until it reaches the 10,000 agents in 2020.
These agents should be gradually deployed at the EU’s external borders as well as in the Mediterranean in order to more effectively address the common challenge of managing migration and borders. The total cost of the proposal of the European Commission amounts to 1,300 million euros for the next two years, while for the next EU budget, which will cover the period 2021-2027, a total of 11,300 million is proposed.
