Spain assumes the presidency of the Security Committee of OSCE

The Diplomat. 13/02/2018

Spain assumed yesterday the presidency of the Security Committee of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), whose priorities will be the fight against illegal human, arms, drug and cultural goods trafficking, the fight against terrorism and the return of foreign terrorist combatants, the security of the borders through the exchange of information and cyber-threats and risks derived from new information and communication technologies.

The Spanish presidency will extend throughout 2018 and it will coincide with the presidency in exercise of Italy. Spain, which presided over the OSCE in 2007, will now assume for the first time the presidency of one of its three Committees. Furthermore, Spain will host the annual Mediterranean Conference of the OSCE this year.

The Security Committee meets every month to prepare the documents relating to security to be presented as resolutions for their approval by the Foreign Ministries of the 57 States participating in the Ministerial Council of the end of the year, which will take place in December in Milan.
