Three Spaniards are among the five people who have been arrested in Sao Tome and Principe accused of participating in a «terrorist operation to subvert the constitutional order,» according to local press. Sources of the Diplomatic Information Office confirmed to Europa Press yesterday the arrest of the three Spaniards, without specifying the charges against them or their identity.
The Spanish embassy in Libreville (Gabon), which assumes relations with this small island country of the Gulf of Guinea, was informed of the arrests by the São Tomé and Príncipe authorities last Sunday. The Spaniards, whom the local government has labeled as «mercenaries», are kept in preventive detention. The honorary consul of Spain in São Tomé and Príncipe, María Teresa Mendizábal. He planned to visit the detainees.
