This June is full of cultural events organised by the Embassy of Ireland.<\/strong> They are as follows:<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Irish writer, editor and publisher Eimear Ryan<\/strong> will be in conversation with Spanish writer, actress and former gymnast Almudena Cid<\/strong> (pictured) in the Europa Pavilion<\/strong> at this year’s Book Fair<\/strong> on Friday 14 June<\/strong> at 7.30pm to discuss the role of women in sport, the challenges they face and how their writing has captured their own personal experiences.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This year, to mark the 10th anniversary of the Madrid Bloomsday Society,<\/strong> they will host Penelope’s Dream,<\/em><\/strong> an opera by Spanish conductor and composer Pedro Halffter, <\/strong>on Thursday 13 June<\/strong> at 19.30 at the Ateneo de Madrid.<\/strong> The programme will feature Ashley Bell<\/strong> on soprano, Juan Carlos Garvayo <\/strong>and Pedro Halffter<\/strong> on piano and stage director Ant\u00f3n Armendariz D\u00edaz.<\/strong> Admission is free and seats are available until full capacity is reached. Tourism Ireland<\/strong> is organising a number of Bloomsday<\/strong> activities this year which we will be reporting on in the coming days. You can find out about all the events taking place in Madrid and throughout Spain here.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The English language bookshop Desperate Literature<\/strong> in Madrid, in collaboration with Culture Ireland, Tourism Ireland <\/strong>and the Bloomsday Society,<\/strong> are organising a Bloomsday Festival<\/strong> at the Ateneo de Madrid<\/strong> on Sunday 16 June<\/strong> at 7pm. Guests include John Banville, Lisa Hannigan <\/strong>and Eimear McBride.<\/strong> Admission is free.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

For this year’s Bloomsday, the Irish Cultural Association of Valencia<\/strong> is organising readings and songs from Ulysses<\/em> on Sunday 16 June<\/strong> at 11am at Metropolis Irish Bistro<\/strong> (c\/ Cuba, 48, Ruzafa), with a second reading of a selection from the programme next to the Duck Pond in Viveros Park<\/strong><\/a> at 7pm.<\/p>\n

La L\u00ednea de la Concepci\u00f3n<\/strong> will join in the Bloomsday celebrations on Friday morning, 14 June,<\/strong> starting with a visit to the city market, a special Irish breakfast at Caf\u00e9 Modelo<\/strong> and readings at the Jos\u00e9 Riquelme Library, La Gorgo Libros & Caf\u00e9<\/strong> and Librer\u00eda Ares.<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

At the Teatro Bret\u00f3n<\/strong> in Logro\u00f1o, Bloomsday will be present with the opera El sue\u00f1o de Pen\u00e9lope (Penelope’s Dream) <\/em><\/strong>on Saturday 15 June<\/strong> at 8pm. This is the same opera that will also be performed at the Ateneo de Madrid with the Bloomsday Society.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Malaga will celebrate Bloomsday in collaboration with the University of Malaga<\/strong> and the Irish pub Morriseys,<\/strong> organised by Ray Smyth<\/strong> and the Spanish writer Carlos P\u00e9rez Torres.<\/strong> On Sunday 16 June<\/strong> there will be readings and songs for the gathering at the Ba\u00f1os del Carmen.<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In Barcelona, Bloomsday will be held at Documenta bookshop<\/strong> on Sunday 16 June<\/strong> at 1pm. The Calders bookshop<\/strong> will also organise some readings. The Bloom literary school<\/strong> is also planning various activities.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Amergin Poetry Festival<\/strong> in A Coru\u00f1a, organised in collaboration with three local cultural groups, will take place from 27 to 29 June.<\/strong> The festival will begin with a musical evening on Thursday 27 June, at 9 p.m. in the Pub Delirium Coru\u00f1a.<\/strong> On Friday 28 June, there will be a cultural event at the Centro Alexandre B\u00f3veda <\/strong>from 6pm, with talks on Irish poetry and Ireland’s relationship with Galicia. On Saturday 29 June, the traditional Festival will be held on the beach under the Tower of Hercules,<\/strong> from 19.30, with the participation of poets, artists, singers and pipers. Finally, the Irish music group Fi\u00e1rock<\/strong> and the Luna Celta Irish Dance Academy<\/strong> have organised a special concert in collaboration with Culture Ireland<\/strong> and Madrid City Council <\/strong>on Saturday 29 June<\/strong> at 7pm at the Centro Cultural Casa de Vacas (El Retiro).<\/strong> Admission is free until full capacity is reached.<\/p>\n
