17 Portuguese and Spanish authors, historians, journalists and actors are part of the Portuguese programme of the 83rd edition of the Madrid Book Fair,<\/strong> which runs until 16 June in the Parque de El Retiro.<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

On the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution,<\/strong> and in the month that marks the 500th anniversary of the birth of Lu\u00eds de Cam\u00f5es,<\/strong> poetry is in the gardens with 6 Portuguese poets, reflection sessions on the Portuguese revolution and the actor Ant\u00f3nio Fonseca<\/strong> reciting Os Lus\u00edadas<\/em> for visitors to the Retiro.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Portugal is represented at the Book Fair with a stand in the international zone, in partnership with RELI – Rede de Livrarias Independentes<\/strong> and with the support of Cam\u00f5es, I.P.<\/strong> The Portuguese stand is in Block 28C, no. 4.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The programme kicks off today Thursday at 18.30 with the first session of the Tramas europeas<\/em><\/strong> cycle at the BNE – Biblioteca Nacional de Espa\u00f1a.<\/strong> Under the title Portugal-Spain: 50 years of Culture and Democracy,<\/em><\/strong> the Portuguese historian Irene Flunser Pimentel<\/strong> will talk with the journalist Diego Carcedo<\/strong> and the historian Juli\u00e1n Casanova.<\/strong> Portugal thus reinforces its collaboration with the Biblioteca Nacional de Espa\u00f1a and will be the Focus Country of this cycle in 2024.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Tereixa Constenla <\/strong>and Ricardo Viel<\/strong> will talk about the April Revolution<\/strong> next Friday at 18.30 in the Caf\u00e9 Comercial.<\/strong> The El Pa\u00eds<\/em> correspondent in Lisbon has just published the book Abril es un pa\u00eds<\/em> (Tusquets), which presents some of the characters and epic moments of that April morning that founded Portuguese democracy. Ricardo Viel, director of communications at the Jos\u00e9 Saramago Foundation, is the author of La Revoluci\u00f3n amable<\/em> (La Umbr\u00eda y la Solana), which hit bookstores in May.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

As part of the Europa Ilustra exhibition,<\/em> the illustrator Catarina Sobral<\/strong> will be at the Children’s Pavilion<\/strong> of the fair to give a drawing workshop for children called TOI TOI TOI TOI,<\/em><\/strong> which will take place on Sunday 9 June at 11 a.m. (+7 years).<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

On 10 June, Portugal, Cam\u00f5es and Portuguese Communities Day, the journey to India begins with Ant\u00f3nio Fonseca,<\/strong> guided by Cam\u00f5es through Os Lus\u00edadas.<\/em> For the last 16 years, the actor has dedicated himself to memorising the 8,816 verses of the 10 Cantos of the Portuguese epic<\/em> that he brings to Madrid. In the JaLEO<\/strong> space, from 6 p.m. onwards.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

On 11 and 12 June, Poetry is in the Street.<\/strong> On Tuesday, at 7 p.m., Maria Br\u00e1s Ferreira, Marta Chaves, Vasco Gato <\/strong>and Luis Mar\u00eda Marina<\/strong> come together in a poetic encounter at the Caf\u00e9 Comercial.<\/strong> The following day, it is the turn of Catarina Nunes de Almeida, Francisca Camelo <\/strong>and Miguel Martins,<\/strong> who will occupy the room frequented by Antonio Machado and Camilo Jos\u00e9 Cela, during a poetic dinner from 9 p.m. onwards.<\/p>\n

On 13 June, Gon\u00e7alo M. Tavares,<\/strong> published in Spain by La Umbr\u00eda y la Solana and Seix Barral, will present his work in the European Pavilion<\/strong> at 6 p.m., accompanied by the poet, essayist and art critic Enrique Andr\u00e9s<\/strong> and the professor and translator Antonio S\u00e1ez Delgado.<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

During the Book Fair, the candidatures for the 4th edition of the Literary Residence in Madrid, a project organised by the Portuguese Embassy and the Cam\u00f5es I.P. in collaboration with DGLAB and the Residencia de Estudiantes, will be announced. Jos\u00e9 Ri\u00e7o Direitinho, Patr\u00edcia Portela <\/strong>and Andr\u00e9 Murra\u00e7as<\/strong> have been Writers in Residence since the launch of the project in 2021.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Literature meets music in the return of the Fado Festival to Madrid,<\/em><\/strong> as previously reported by The Diplomat,<\/strong><\/a> in the first days of June with three concerts, a film screening and a lecture by Rui Vieira Nery.<\/strong> Tomorrow, Caminho<\/strong> performs at the Teatro Alb\u00e9niz, where Cristina Branco<\/strong> will also perform on 8 June; these shows will start at 9pm.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In addition to Fado, Madrid celebrates the piano. Next weekend, Piano City Madrid<\/em><\/strong> will once again take over the Spanish capital with free concerts all over the city. This year, the Portuguese pianist Paulo Pacheco<\/strong> will perform at CentroCentro<\/strong> in a concert on Friday 7 June at 8.15 pm.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Portuguese violinist Madalena Rollo<\/strong> is taking part in the 17th International Classical Music Festival<\/em><\/strong>, organised by the Fundaci\u00f3n Katarina Gurska.<\/strong> The concert, given by the Orquesta Sinf\u00f3nica del Real Sitio,<\/strong> will take place in the Teatro Can\u00f3nigos del Real Sitio de San Ildefonso<\/strong> on 15 June at 8.00 pm. Works by Sibelius<\/strong> and Khachaturian<\/strong> will be performed, conducted by Jaume Santonja.<\/strong> The festival programme continues until July.<\/p>\n
