Less than half of the personnel in Foreign Affairs are civil servants and of these, numbering 2.302, some 821 are career diplomats who form part of the structure of the Ministry, as this 2016 begins.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In the department, led by Jos\u00e9 Manuel Garc\u00eda-Margallo \u2014at least until the formation of the new government following the elections of 20 December\u2014 there are currently 5.631 employees, of which 2.302, less than half of them, are civil servants. And of these, \u00a0821 are diplomats, according to the latest updated figures.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This list, published by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs doe not include those career diplomats who during periods of leave are currently working in private companies, according to the information given to The Diplomat<\/em> by the Diplomatic Information Office. Nor does it include those diplomats presently in other ministries, in constitutional organisations, such as the Senate or the Congress or in the\u00a0European External Action Service, so that the total figure would be around one thousand.<\/p>\n

Spain has 117 bilateral embassies, 10 multilateral missions and 90 consulates<\/span><\/p>\n

Although this figure is lower than that of other countries, Spain does have a considerable network of representational offices in the world; specifically, 117 bilateral embassies, 10 multilateral missions and 90 consulates. This figure is lower than that of such countries as France which has 163 bilateral embassies, 10 multilateral missions and 96 consulates. In them, in addition to ambassadors and other diplomatic personnel are others who are not civil servants.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Although all ambassadors are normally career diplomats, there are currently two political ambassadors: Federico Trillo, former President of Congress and former minister of defence in the Partido Popular, and who is the current Ambassador to Great Britain, and Ignacio Wert, former minister of education with Mariano Rajoy and now serving as\u00a0Ambassador to the OECD in Paris<\/a>. At the present time, there are three exceptional cases, those of the ambassadors in Rome. Moscow and Oslo, now retired from the diplomatic service but who will not be replaced until the new government is formed.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n
