The first tripartite meeting between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jos\u00e9 Manuel Albares, his British colleague, David Cameron, and the executive vice-president of the European Commission for Interinstitutional Relations, Maros Sefcovic, to address the future of Gibraltar concluded yesterday in Brussels with \u201csignificant progress\u201d on \u201cthe airport, goods and mobility\u201d and with the commitment to resume negotiations in \u201cthe coming weeks to conclude the EU-United Kingdom Agreement.\u201d<\/strong><\/h4>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Maros Sefcovic, the commissioner in charge of the EU negotiations with the United Kingdom Government on the issue of Gibraltar, had summoned Albares and the Secretary of the Foreign Office in the community capital yesterday in an attempt to advance the pending issues of the negotiation on the future of Gibraltar after Brexit, after eighteen formal rounds of talks between Brussels and London, which began in October 2021. The Chief Minister of Gibraltar, Fabian Picardo, was present at the meeting as a member of the British delegation.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

At the end of the meeting, the three parties issued a joint statement in which they limited themselves to announcing that the negotiations, in \u201cthe first meeting in this format,\u201d were held \u201cin a constructive atmosphere, with significant progress achieved.\u201d\u00a0\u201cGeneral political lines have been agreed, including on the airport, goods and mobility,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0the text continues.\u00a0\u201cNegotiations will continue over the coming weeks to conclude the EU-UK Agreement,\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>it adds.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to the statement, the participants have agreed \u201cthis was a productive day.\u201d \u201cThe meeting reaffirmed the shared commitment to conclude an EU-UK Agreement to secure a future prosperity for the whole region,\u201d say the three parties. \u201cThis Agreement will bring confidence, legal certainty and stability to the lives and livelihoods of the people of the whole region, without prejudice to the parties\u2019 legal positions,\u201d it concludes.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

For his part, Picardo met with Cameron before the meeting with Sef\u010dovic and Albares. \u201cGibraltar has worked closely with the British Foreign Office throughout the negotiation process,\u201d said the Government of the Rock in a brief press release.<\/p>\n

Albares: \u201cIt is not just another day, important progress has been made\u201d<\/strong><\/h5>\n

After the meeting, Albares told journalists that yesterday\u00a0\u201cwas not just another day, it is not just another day of negotiation. It is a very important day, where important progress has been made and in which we all agree to continue working in the coming weeks to conclude.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

According to the minister,\u00a0there are still \u201ca few weeks of work\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0left to conclude the agreement, but he insisted that this Friday \u201cgeneral political lines\u201d have been agreed on \u201cthe airport, in goods and mobility.\u201d\u00a0\u201cWe have agreed not to go into details or give more details about what those agreed political lines are,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0warned the minister, who also specified that the parties had agreed that,\u00a0\u201cin the coming weeks, all the texts that we present, that we exchange, will be at all times joint texts.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

According to Albares, the European Commission and Spain are \u201cperfectly aligned\u201d in the negotiation over the Rock. In any case, he assured, the parties have not set a specific date to close the agreement, although he acknowledged that, if it were up to him, it would be closed \u201ctomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

For his part,\u00a0the counselor of the Presidency, Interior, Social Dialogue and Administrative Simplification of the Junta de Andaluc\u00eda, Antonio Sanz<\/strong>, expressed the \u201csurprise\u201d of the autonomous Executive for \u201cnot being informed in any case, in any way, by of the Government of Spain\u201d on the Gibraltar negotiations, \u201csomething that has never happened.\u201d<\/p>\n
