{"id":82887,"date":"2024-04-12T04:06:43","date_gmt":"2024-04-12T02:06:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/zen-hopper.82-223-81-17.plesk.page\/2024\/04\/12\/european-parliament-expresses-great-concern-about-eu-funds-diversion-in-the-koldo-case\/"},"modified":"2024-04-12T04:06:43","modified_gmt":"2024-04-12T02:06:43","slug":"european-parliament-expresses-great-concern-about-eu-funds-diversion-in-the-koldo-case","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thediplomatinspain.com\/en\/2024\/04\/12\/european-parliament-expresses-great-concern-about-eu-funds-diversion-in-the-koldo-case\/","title":{"rendered":"European Parliament expresses \u201cgreat concern\u201d about EU funds diversion in the Koldo case"},"content":{"rendered":"<h6><strong>The Diplomat<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>The European Parliament expressed yesterday, at the proposal of the European People&#8217;s Party (EPP), its &#8220;great concern&#8221; about the possible diversion of EU funds in the so-called &#8216;Koldo case&#8217;, the plot related to possible irregularities in the purchase of masks during the COVID-19 pandemic in Spain.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>With 367 votes in favor, 230 against and 10 abstentions<\/strong>, the plenary session of the European Parliament approved an EPP amendment to the European Commission&#8217;s annual report on spending management in which \u201cserious concern\u201d is expressed about the \u201calleged misuse\u201d of more than 17 million from European funds in this plot, in which Koldo Garc\u00eda Izaguirre, an advisor to the then Minister of Public Works, Jos\u00e9 Luis \u00c1balos, is allegedly involved.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The amounts allegedly embezzled come from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), with 14.6 million euros; and the Solidarity Fund, with 3.1 million, as reported yesterday by the Europa Press agency. Koldo Garc\u00eda Izaguirre and six other people are being investigated for their alleged membership in a \u201ccriminal organization\u201d to profit from nine public contracts for the purchase of masks, valued at 54 million euros.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Likewise, <strong>the text urges the Commission to resort to external auditors in the event of detecting a &#8220;serious lack of capacity in a Member State&#8221;<\/strong> and regrets that the Commission has not discovered this alleged misappropriation of funds &#8220;despite having carried out audits.&#8221; The amendment also criticizes that the European Public Prosecutor&#8217;s Office (EPPO) has received information about the case from an individual and not from the competent authorities and recalls, in this regard, that EU rules establish that <strong>governments must \u201cinform without delay\u201d the European Public Prosecutor&#8217;s Office itself when they have \u201cany suspicion of embezzlement\u201d of funds from the community coffers.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo matter how much Pedro S\u00e1nchez tries to divert attention from the corruption
