The President of the Government, Pedro S\u00e1nchez, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, discussed yesterday with the President of Mauritania, Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, the reinforcement of Europe’s cooperation with this African country in its role as guarantor of security in the Sahel and in the management of the refugee population and in the fight against human trafficking.<\/strong><\/h4>\n

S\u00e1nchez and Von der Leyen made a joint visit to Nouakchott this Thursday in which they discussed with El Ghazouani the strategic relations between, on the one hand, Mauritania and the European Union and, on the other hand, between Spain and the African country, relations \u201cthat encompass diverse areas: political, economic, commercial, cultural, cooperation and security,\u201d according to the joint statement adopted at the end of the meeting.<\/p>\n

Likewise, the two European leaders committed to strengthening their cooperation on peace and security with Mauritania.<\/strong> In this sense, Von der Leyen reaffirmed the EU’s support for the defense and security forces of Mauritania, especially through equipment and the training of a new Mauritanian battalion to combat terrorism, and expressed its willingness to contribute in the framework of joint efforts for the G5-Sahel Defense College to continue its activities.<\/p>\n

Refugees and irregular migration<\/strong><\/h5>\n

The two European leaders also praised the efforts made by Mauritania to host refugees<\/strong> and recognized the pressure that this flow of people puts on local resources and population. Mauritania currently hosts more than 150,000 displaced people and the migratory flow does not decrease.<\/p>\n

Green hydrogen<\/strong><\/h5>\n
