The President of the Government, Pedro S\u00e1nchez, was yesterday “dismayed” by the “tragic death” of the former president of Chile Sebasti\u00e1n Pi\u00f1era, who died this past Tuesday as a result of a helicopter accident in the center of the country.<\/strong><\/h4>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cDismayed by the tragic death of the former president of Chile Sebasti\u00e1n Pi\u00f1era,\u201d <\/strong>declared Pedro S\u00e1nchez through his official account on the social network X. \u201cMy condolences to his family and friends, as well as to the Government and all the Chilean people,\u201d he continued. \u201cDuring his mandate, we strengthened ties between our two countries and together we made COP 25 possible at a crucial moment in the fight against the climate emergency,\u201d<\/strong> he added. \u201cRest in peace,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

In October 2019, Pedro S\u00e1nchez contacted Sebasti\u00e1n Pi\u00f1era to offer Madrid as a possible alternative venue for the 25th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP25).<\/strong> COP25 was going to take place in Santiago, Chile in December of that year, but the Chilean government was forced to abandon the event due to mass protests in the South American country. The summit was finally held in Spain.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sebasti\u00e1n Pi\u00f1era (president of Chile in two periods, 2010-2014 and 2018-2022) died this Tuesday after the helicopter<\/strong> in which he was traveling with three other people crashed into Lake Ranco, in the Los R\u00edos region, in the center of Chile, as reported by the Chilean Minister of the Interior, Carolina Toh\u00e1, during a press conference. The president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, has ordered a state funeral and has decreed three days of national mourning<\/strong> and the Government spokesperson, Camila Vallejo, has announced that, \u201cwho was twice elected president of Chile, will have the honors and recognitions that he deserves.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pi\u00f1era made two official trips to Spain in October 2018 and September 2019. <\/strong>Both visits took place during his second presidential term and in both he was received by S\u00e1nchez and the King. In addition, Pedro S\u00e1nchez was received by Sebasti\u00e1n Pi\u00f1era in Santiago de Chile on August 28, 2018<\/strong>, within the framework of his first visit to Latin America as President of the Government.<\/p>\n

Condolences in Latin America<\/strong><\/h5>\n

The death of Sebasti\u00e1n Pi\u00f1era has shocked the entire Ibero-American world<\/strong>. The secretary general of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro<\/strong>, has sent his condolences to \u201cfamily and friends\u201d of Pi\u00f1era, and has stated that the organization accompanies the Chilean people \u201cin these moments of sadness.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In addition, the Presidency of Argentina<\/strong> has been the first head of State in the region to express its condolences \u201cto his family, friends and to all the Chilean people\u201d for the death of Pi\u00f1era. For his part, the president of Venezuela, Nicol\u00e1s Maduro<\/strong>, has conveyed, his \u201csincere words of support and solidarity wishing strength to all his family and friends\u201d through the social network X. Brazilian president, Luis In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva<\/strong>, has declared that both leaders worked together to \u201cstrengthen the bilateral relationship\u201d through \u201cgood dialogue\u201d; and the president of Uruguay, Luis Lacalle<\/strong> Pou<\/strong>, has praised Pi\u00f1era’s \u201cpositive attitude\u201d and recalled his support for Uruguay in sending vaccines against the coronavirus during the pandemic.<\/p>\n

Likewise, the president of Peru, Dina Boluarte<\/strong>, has stated that Pi\u00f1era was an \u201cimportant political leader in the region\u201d; The president of Paraguay, Santiago Pe\u00f1a<\/strong>, has sent his condolences to Pi\u00f1era’s family and friends as they face \u201cthis moment of pain\u201d; the president of Honduras, Xiomara Castro<\/strong>, has expressed \u201cher solidarity with the people of Chile\u201d; and the president of Panama, Laurentino Cortizo<\/strong>, has \u201cdeeply regretted the unexpected departure of former president Sebasti\u00e1n Pi\u00f1era\u201d.<\/p>\n
