{"id":82193,"date":"2024-02-01T05:07:13","date_gmt":"2024-02-01T04:07:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/zen-hopper.82-223-81-17.plesk.page\/2024\/02\/01\/reynders-calls-bolanos-and-gonzalez-pons-again-for-february-12-to-talk-about-the-judiciary\/"},"modified":"2024-02-01T05:07:13","modified_gmt":"2024-02-01T04:07:13","slug":"reynders-calls-bolanos-and-gonzalez-pons-again-for-february-12-to-talk-about-the-judiciary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thediplomatinspain.com\/en\/2024\/02\/01\/reynders-calls-bolanos-and-gonzalez-pons-again-for-february-12-to-talk-about-the-judiciary\/","title":{"rendered":"Reynders calls Bola\u00f1os and Gonz\u00e1lez Pons again for February 12 to talk about the Judiciary"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5><strong>Julio Garc\u00eda-Aqu\u00ed Europa<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>The Commissioner of Justice, Didier Reynders, yesterday achieved a \u201cclear commitment\u201d from F\u00e9lix Bola\u00f1os, Minister of Justice, and Esteban Gonz\u00e1lez Pons, Deputy Secretary of Institutional Action of the PP, to renew the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ,<\/strong> <strong>by its acronym in Spanish).<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a statement after the first negotiation meeting with Bola\u00f1os and Pons for the renewal of the CGPJ, held in Brussels, Reynders recalled the recommendation of the Commission for 2022 and 2023 that invites &#8220;to proceed as a priority with the renewal of the Judiciary Council and initiate, immediately after the renewal, a process with a view to adapting the appointment of its judge-members, taking into account the European standards on the Judicial Councils.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Commissioner for Justice explained that he had reminded both leaders of the importance of engaging in a constructive dialogue on this issue, and highlights that \u201cat this meeting, there was a clear commitment from all parties to work together to ensure the implementation of the recommendation of the Commission.\u201d In addition, Reynders announced an upcoming meeting on February 12 \u201cto take stock of the discussions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At the end of the meeting, Bola\u00f1os thanked the commissioner for &#8220;the work, the effort, the time and the interest that they are taking in Spain being able to reach an agreement on something as essential as the institutional normality of the judiciary.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Minister of Justice described the meeting as \u201ccordial and constructive.\u201d \u201cWe get to work. This time has to be the final one,\u201d Bola\u00f1os declared to journalists outside the European Commission headquarters.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For his part, Gonz\u00e1lez Pons expressed little enthusiasm after the meeting with Bola\u00f1os and Reynders. \u201cI am very pessimistic,\u201d he said, although he clarified that he is not going to \u201cdeny this process a chance.\u201d \u201cWe are going to talk about everything,\u201d stressed the popular leader, who indicated that the fact that there is a new meeting allows us to consider that progress has been made.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere will be a next meeting, therefore, there are enough guarantees to hold this conversation for at least one more week. In a constructive way,&#8221; declared the popular leader, who specified that what makes him pessimistic is that &#8220;negotiating with the Government of Pedro S\u00e1nchez when one defends the rule of law and the independence of judges does not allow one to be optimistic.&#8221; \u201cThe first thing that the Government of Pedro S\u00e1nchez sacrifices in its negotiations is usually the independence of the judiciary,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Regarding the second part of the Commission&#8217;s recommendation, Gonz\u00e1lez Pons stressed that the
