Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili said: &#8220;We have made huge progress over the past few years in making tourism&#8217;s relevance more visible and more appreciated, by governments and by tourists themselves. But we need to make it even clearer. For this reason, UNWTO is working to build a new narrative around tourism as a force for development and transformation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Thematic Session offered a platform to connect content creators with editors and new media platforms, with UNWTO as the bridge between the two.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Branding and Media Experts Lead the Change<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><b><\/b>Representing the global leader Interbrand,\u00a0<b>Pedro Zarzalejos, Associate Director, Strategy\u00a0<\/b>and<b>\u00a0Borja Borrero, Executive Director Iberia, EMEA &amp; Latam\u00a0<\/b>charted the evolution of branding and analysed how this has impacted the tourism sector.<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><b><\/b><b>Michael Collins<\/b>, Founder and Managing of\u00a0<b>Travel Media<\/b>\u00a0gave expert insights into the changing relationship between Destination Management Organizations (DMOs) and editors, journalists and content creators.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Instagram and Meta: Keeping Content Relevant<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">UNWTO\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unwto.org\/news\/unwto-and-instagram-partner-to-help-destinations-recover-and-rediscover\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"s1\">first partnered with Instagram in 2021<\/span><\/a>, firstly to help lead recovery from the impacts of the pandemic and then to empower destinations to embrace digital storytelling. In Punta Cana:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\">From\u00a0<b>Instagram, Ernest Voyard, Director of Public Policy<\/b>, noted how creators are increasingly\u00a0<b>moving beyond aspirational travel-related content<\/b>\u00a0and instead focusing on issues around sustainability and full immersion in destinations.<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">From\u00a0<b>Meta, Sharon Yang, Director of External Affairs<\/b>, noted how the platform has seen a shift towards creators providing informative tourism and travel-related content, again moving away from more aspirational images and films.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Tourism on the Agenda: The Case of Dominican Republic<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Leading journalists and editors from the Dominican Republic assessed how to place tourism on the editorial agenda at every level.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\">Leading the discussion were\u00a0<b>Director of Diario Libre, In\u00e9s Aizp\u00fan, Director of El D\u00eda Jos\u00e9 Monegro<\/b>, and the Ambassador of the permanent mission of Dominican Republic to UNWTO\u00a0<b>An\u00edbal de Castro.<\/b><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">The panel highlighted the\u00a0<b>importance of diversifying the main messaging<\/b>, with a focus on everything from film and TV tourism to gastronomy tourism.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Content Creators: Raising Awareness<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">To round out the session, UNWTO welcomed leading content creators to give their expert insights into changing trends in tourism-related content: Instagram Creators\u00a0<b>Chlo\u00e9 L\u00e9ger<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<b>Marion Payr<\/b>, provided their experiences from the Dominican Republic from the point-of-view of tourism and travel-creators.
