 <\/p>\n

\u201c2022 began on a positive note\u201d, says the World Tourism Organization in the summary of the year published on its website. Already in January, data from UNWTO showed that tourism was cautiously taking off<\/span><\/a>, and that it needed to\u00a0be rethought<\/span><\/a>.<\/strong><\/h4>\n

 <\/p>\n

The\u00a0UN amplified UNWTO\u2019s global advocacy<\/span><\/a>\u00a0for tourism\u2019s role in recovery, says this annual review. So, UNWTO partnered with sister agencies like WHO for example, around joint warnings that \u201cBlanket Travel Restrictions Don\u2019t Work<\/span><\/a>“.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Advancing common UN goals, in February UNWTO and WHO called for the\u00a0lifting of travel bans<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and agreed to collaborate on a global trust architecture for the recovery of travel. While\u00a0leaders committed to join UNWTO<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to build a social and environmentally sustainable tourism, February ended with UNWTO leading the voice\u00a0of tourism for peace and solidarity<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

UNWTO March\u2019s data continued to reflect the promising\u00a0start of tourism in\u00a0<\/span><\/a>2022. This month, UNWTO released\u00a0New Guidelines Put Women\u2019s Empowerment at Heart of Tourism\u2019s Restart<\/span><\/a>, and announced the launch of the\u00a0second edition of Best Tourism Villages by UNWTO<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to promote rural development through tourism.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Meeting in April for the first ever extraordinary UNWTO General Assembly against the backdrop of the Russian invasion in Ukraine,\u00a0UNWTO Members voted to suspend Russia from Membership<\/span><\/a>. Reinforcing the Global Goals,\u00a0UNWTO launched the \u201cAwake Tourism Challenge\u201d for startups<\/span><\/a>. The\u00a0Glasgow Declaration<\/span><\/a>\u00a0kept growing since its launch at COP26 and surpassed 500 signatories to take climate action through tourism.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A landmark moment happened in May: UNWTO and tourism reached the top of the UN agenda: the first ever\u00a0UN General Assembly High-Level Debate on Sustainable Tourism<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in New York, fueling immediate actions and reverberating during the rest of the year. Other May highlights include upgrading\u00a0SMEs with the Digital Futures programme<\/span><\/a>, and strengthening consumers\u2019 rights with more countries adhering to the\u00a0International Code for the Protection of Tourists<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Facing up to uncertainty, tourism\u00a0kept on growing<\/span><\/a>, as reported by the UNWTO World Tourism Barometer in June. This set the backdrop for the\u00a0116 UNWTO Executive Council<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(Jeddah, Saudi Arabia). UNWTO successfully advocated for tourism action at the\u00a0UN Ocean Conference<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(Lisbon, Portugal), ahead of the biggest event on tourism and youth.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Youth empowerment is a UNWTO priority. The\u00a0first Global Youth Tourism Summit<\/span><\/a>\u00a0gathered young people from 57 countries in July to be part of tourism\u2019s decisions, as reflected in the\u00a0Sorrento Call to Action<\/span><\/a>. That same month, the UN Secretary-General’s\u00a0\u00a0Progress report on SDGs drew on UNWTO\u2019s statistical work<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to track tourism\u2019s role in driving growth.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

August also brought good news for the sector. <\/span>International\u00a0tourism continued reporting positive,<\/span><\/a>\u00a0recording 250 million international arrivals during the first five months of 2022. This set the backdrop ahead of\u00a0World Tourism Day 2022 and its theme Rethinking Tourism<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

27 September,\u00a0World Tourism Day<\/span><\/a>\u00a0emphasized the sector\u2019s unique potential to drive recovery and deliver positive change for people everywhere. This followed the\u00a0G20 Tourism Working Group me<\/span><\/a>eting in Bali, where UNWTO presented the G20 Bali Guidelines for SMEs. Looking at the progress since the start of the year,\u00a0tourism was back to 60% of pre-pandemic<\/span><\/a>\u00a0levels.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

September mas a <\/span>busy month which also saw UNWTO advancing tourism and rural development at the\u00a06th Wine Conference on Wine Tourism<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(Alba, Italy), and promoting education in tourism with the launch of the\u00a0first national competition of UNWTO Students\u2019 League<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in Switzerland.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Sustainability and the green transformation of tourism took centre stage in October as the\u00a0UNWTO International Network of Tourism Observatories<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(INSTO) welcomed more members, and\u00a0Ministers agreed to advance circularity and climate action in Pan European tourism.<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Tourism was transformed at<\/a><\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0UNWTO Ministers\u2019 Summit,<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in November, during the most successful edition to date with delegates joining UNWTO\u2019s vision to rethink tourism. UNWTO made the case for\u00a0tourism in COP27<\/span><\/a>, where it represented over 700 signatories of the Glasgow Declaration advancing a NetZero sector. This was followed by new data showing\u00a0arrivals reached 63% of pre-pandemic levels<\/span><\/a>\u00a0during January-September 2022. This set the framework for the\u00a0117 UNWTO Executive Council<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(Marrakesh, Morocco).<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In December, r<\/span>ural development, inclusivity and sustainability led conversations at the\u00a07th World Forum on Gastronomy Tourism<\/span><\/a>. Winners of\u00a0Best Tourism Villages<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Students League<\/span><\/a>\u00a0wrapped up 2022 with their solutions to boost rural development through tourism. In 2023 we look forward, making the shift from rethinking to transforming the sector around key priorities: jobs and training, education and youth development, and sustainability and innovation. With UNWTO as tourism’s voice at the global level, including at the UN General Assembly, the sector has never been more relevant – nor more needed.<\/p>\n
