Tomorrow Wednesday at 6 p.m., Casa Asia<\/strong> of Madrid presents at its headquarters in the Palacio de Ca\u00f1ete<\/strong> in Madrid (Calle Mayor, 6) the oldest literary testimony about the death of the Buddha,<\/strong> a new edition of the Mahaparinibbanasutta<\/em> or Great Sutta of the Complete Extinction.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Unlike other major works of early Buddhist literature, it is not based on a philosophical dialogue, nor on a discourse of the Buddha, but rather resembles a logbook. The work recounts the last months of Gotama Buddha’s<\/strong> life, his terminal illness, the food poisoning that preceded his death, the funeral ceremonies, with the subsequent distribution of the relics of bones and ashes, and the construction of the first Buddhist monuments. This volume incorporates, for the first time translated into English directly from the Pali language, the masterly commentary by Buddhaghosa (5th century AD), one of the great Buddhist philosophers of antiquity.<\/p>\n

The event will be presented by Emilio de Miguel,<\/strong> director of the Casa Asia Centre-Madrid, and Aleix Ruiz Falqu\u00e9s,<\/strong> responsible for the translation, introduction and notes of this edition, and Ricardo Guerrero,<\/strong> president of the Hispanic Association of Buddhism, will participate.
