Until 15 May, the Museo Nacional Thyssen<\/strong> Bornemisza<\/strong> is presenting Memorias mestizas (Mestizo Memories),<\/em><\/strong> an exhibition by the Afro-Andalusian artist Carla Hayes Mayoral<\/strong> (M\u00e1laga, 1997), who questions the viewer about the colonial past of Spain and Europe from an identity-based enquiry.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Using a combination of raffia, a material so characteristic of African culture, and visual references from the collective Western imaginary, Hayes Mayoral deploys a mixed-race, neo-baroque installation that subverts the notion of the space of power. The theatricality and astonishment at the wonder of its apparently aestheticist execution induce the deconstruction of the hegemonic narrative.
