From the 1980s onwards, hundreds of anonymous Spaniards, most of them without education or financial means, were left alone, isolated in the oblivion of their own compatriots, who preferred to build the new democracy without looking to the past. To alleviate the precarious living conditions of those forgotten in exile, in 1984 a small group of people created the <strong>Association of Friends of Former Spanish Refugees (AARE)<\/strong> to send them food, clothes and medicine and to offer them a link to their homeland. These are the letters with which the last Spanish exiles wrote back, thanking them for their generosity. They reflect their suffering, their fears and their affection for a land to which very few of them could return.
