{"id":73863,"date":"2021-06-17T04:04:49","date_gmt":"2021-06-17T02:04:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/zen-hopper.82-223-81-17.plesk.page\/2021\/06\/17\/the-government-removes-ambassadors-to-russia-and-iran-on-retirement\/"},"modified":"2021-06-17T04:04:49","modified_gmt":"2021-06-17T02:04:49","slug":"the-government-removes-ambassadors-to-russia-and-iran-on-retirement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thediplomatinspain.com\/en\/2021\/06\/17\/the-government-removes-ambassadors-to-russia-and-iran-on-retirement\/","title":{"rendered":"The Government removes ambassadors to Russia and Iran on retirement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6><strong>The Diplomat<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Official State Gazette yesterday published the resignations of the ambassadors to Russia, Fernando Valderrama, and to Iran, Luis Felipe Fern\u00e1ndez de la Pe\u00f1a, who in the second half of May reached retirement age<\/strong>, having reached 70 years of age.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The two diplomats have remained in their posts for several more weeks, waiting fo<strong>r Foreign Minister Arancha Gonz\u00e1lez Laya<\/strong> to decide on their replacements.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to <em>The Diplomat<\/em>, the government agreed on the 8th<strong> to ask the Russian authorities for permission for Camilo Villarino<\/strong>, Gonz\u00e1lez Laya&#8217;s chief of staff, to become the new ambassador<strong> to Moscow<\/strong>, a<strong>nd the Iranian authorities to appoint \u00c1ngel Losada,<\/strong> until now the EU&#8217;s special envoy for the Sahel, as ambassador <strong>to Tehran<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The two embassies will be headed by Charg\u00e9s d&#8217;Affaires until the Russian and Iranian governments grant the requested permissions and the new ambassadors can take up their posts.<br \/>\nThree other embassies have also been headed by Charg\u00e9s d&#8217;Affaires for months, as their incumbents have retired and their replacements have not been appointed.
