{"id":148232,"date":"2026-07-27T15:13:48","date_gmt":"2026-07-27T13:13:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thediplomatinspain.com\/2026\/07\/27\/albares-pide-personalmente-a-almeida-que-renuncie-a-desalojar-la-sede-de-casa-arabe-en-madrid\/"},"modified":"2026-07-27T15:26:54","modified_gmt":"2026-07-27T13:26:54","slug":"albares-personally-asks-almeida-to-reconsider-the-eviction-of-casa-arabe-headquarters-from-madrid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thediplomatinspain.com\/en\/2026\/07\/27\/albares-personally-asks-almeida-to-reconsider-the-eviction-of-casa-arabe-headquarters-from-madrid\/","title":{"rendered":"Albares personally asks Almeida to reconsider the eviction of Casa \u00c1rabe headquarters from Madrid"},"content":{"rendered":"<h6><strong>Eduardo Gonz\u00e1lez<\/strong><\/h6>\n<h4><strong>Foreign Minister Jos\u00e9 Manuel Albares personally asked the Mayor of Madrid, Jos\u00e9 Luis Mart\u00ednez-Almeida, on Monday to reverse his decision to evict Casa \u00c1rabe headquarters from the capital because \u201cit represents serious damage to foreign policy, Spain\u2019s international image, and Madrid\u2019s international standing.\u201d<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>On June 29, the Madrid City Council formally informed the Extraordinary Governing Council of the Casa \u00c1rabe Consortium that Mart\u00ednez-Almeida had decided to reclaim the Escuelas Aguirre building \u201cfor its renovation and subsequent use by the City Council.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The building, located at the intersection of Alcal\u00e1 and O\u2019Donnell streets, has housed Casa \u00c1rabe\u2019s headquarters since March 2008, following a major interior renovation. However, according to the City Council, the withdrawal of the Community of Madrid from the Casa \u00c1rabe Consortium, announced last January and ratified on June 29, implies a modification of the Board of Trustees and \u201cenables the City Council to exercise its right to recover the building without compensation,\u201d in accordance with the transfer decree, which \u201cestablishes, among the grounds for termination of the transfer, \u2018any alteration in the composition of the consortium\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to sources at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Albares spoke with Mayor Almeida on Monday morning, \u201cat the minister\u2019s request,\u201d to discuss the unilateral announcement of the eviction of Casa \u00c1rabe and to reiterate \u201cwhat he had already conveyed to him in a letter: his willingness to engage in dialogue and reverse the situation, and his offer of a meeting between them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also conveyed to him \u201cthe unease and surprise that this unilateral decision has generated among the Arab ambassadors residing in Madrid, the Arabic students at Casa \u00c1rabe, Spanish and international intellectuals, and numerous Madrid residents who have enjoyed Casa \u00c1rabe&#8217;s activities for the past 20 years.\u201d On July 23, Albares met with members of the Council of Arab Ambassadors residing in Spain to discuss the issue.<\/p>\n<p>The minister also warned the mayor that \u201cthis decision is incomprehensible to the governments and societies of our Arab friends, with whom Spain maintains the best relationship in its history, and represents serious damage to foreign policy, Spain&#8217;s international image, and Madrid&#8217;s international standing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also reminded him that \u201cthe City Council has participated in all the board meetings and signed all the minutes relating to the management of Casa \u00c1rabe, and has praised its current leadership, which is implementing a comprehensive management plan,\u201d and conveyed \u201chis surprise at an announcement made by the mayor himself to the media in a surprising manner and without prior notice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe conversation, which was cordial and constructive throughout, concluded with an agreement to continue the dialogue between both parties and between the technical staff with a view to keeping Casa \u00c1rabe at its current location,\u201d the sources confirmed. \u201cThe minister will meet tomorrow, Tuesday, with the Arabic students at the Palacio de Santa Cruz at 11:00 a.m., at their request, to convey their unease and rejection of the City Council&#8217;s announcement to the minister and to gather his feedback on the matter,\u201d they concluded.<\/p>\n<p>Following Almeida&#8217;s announcement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs accused the City Council of acting &#8220;with absolute institutional disloyalty&#8221; and denounced that this decision, like the one taken by the Autonomous Community of Madrid regarding Casa \u00c1rabe, &#8220;has a marked partisan character,&#8221; according to sources from the Ministry who spoke to <em>The
