\u201cImposing 30% tariffs on EU exports would disrupt vital transatlantic supply chains, to the detriment of businesses, consumers, and patients on both sides of the Atlantic,\u201d said von der Leyen in an official statement, confirming that Brussels has received the formal letter from the U.S. President outlining the revised tariff rate and new implementation timeline.<\/p>\n
The Commission President defended the EU\u2019s trade record, stating that \u201cfew economies in the world match the European Union\u2019s level of openness and adherence to fair trade practices.\u201d She emphasized that the EU has consistently prioritized a negotiated solution with Washington, in line with its commitment to \u201cdialogue, stability, and a constructive transatlantic partnership.\u201d<\/p>\n
Von der Leyen reiterated that Brussels remains open to further negotiations in hopes of reaching an agreement before August 1. However, she made clear that \u201call necessary steps will be taken to safeguard the EU\u2019s interests, including the adoption of proportionate countermeasures if needed.\u201d In the meantime, she added, the EU will continue strengthening its global trade partnerships, \u201cfirmly anchored in the principles of rules-based international trade.\u201d<\/p>\n
