The Council of Ministers on Tuesday removed Antonio P\u00e9rez-Hern\u00e1ndez y Torra from his post as Spanish Ambassador to the Dominican Republic, at the proposal of Foreign Minister Jos\u00e9 Manuel Albares. He is just five days shy of turning seventy, the retirement age for civil servants.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Born in Madrid on June 8, 1955, and a career diplomat since 1981, Antonio P\u00e9rez-Hern\u00e1ndez served in the Spanish diplomatic missions in Turkey, the North Atlantic Council, and Morocco until he was appointed Deputy Director General for International Security Affairs in 1996 and subsequently Director of the Office of the Secretary of State for International Cooperation and Ibero-America.<\/p>\n

In 2000, he was appointed Director General of the Institute for Cooperation with the Arab World, the Mediterranean, and Developing Countries, and Director General for Cooperation with Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe.<\/p>\n

P\u00e9rez-Hern\u00e1ndez served as Ambassador to Iran from 2004 to 2008, Ambassador to Nicaragua from 2008 to 2011, Ambassador on Special Mission for Energy Affairs from 2011 to 2012, and Ambassador to Venezuela from 2012 to 2017.<\/p>\n

In 2017, he was appointed Director General for Ibero-America and the Caribbean, and from late 2018 to late 2020, he served as Director of the Casa de Am\u00e9rica Consortium. Antonio P\u00e9rez-Hern\u00e1ndez has headed the Embassy in Santo Domingo since August 3, 2021.<\/p>\n
