King Felipe VI’s 2024 Christmas message was marked by a call for serenity as a key element to face the political and social challenges that Spain is going through. From the Royal Palace, one of the novelties of the 2024 Christmas message, the monarch emphasized the importance of a constructive dialogue and consensus as pillars to preserve democracy and strengthen coexistence in the country.<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Serenity as a clamorous demand<\/strong><\/p>\n

Felipe VI stressed that, although political contention is legitimate in democracy, it should not become a constant noise that makes it difficult to meet the real needs of citizens. “The political contention, legitimate, but sometimes thunderous, should not prevent us from hearing an even more clamorous demand: a demand for serenity,” he said, highlighting the need to create a space for dialogue and cooperation between all political forces.<\/p>\n

In this context, the monarch praised the recent reform of article 49 of the Constitution, which addresses the rights of people with disabilities, as an example of what can be achieved through consensus. \u201cA pact of coexistence is protected through dialogue; this dialogue, with dignity and generosity, must always nourish the definition of the common will and the action of the State,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

A country with great challenges and potential<\/strong><\/p>\n

The King reviewed the main challenges facing Spain, such as access to housing, the management of immigration and the growing polarization in public debate. In each of these issues, he appealed to shared responsibility and the search for joint solutions, putting the general interest above partisan interests.<\/p>\n

He also dedicated a space to highlight the potential of Spain as a nation. \u201cSpain is a great country, with a promising present and a future full of opportunities, as long as we know how to work together,\u201d he said. He also highlighted the role of young people as the driving force of change and progress, urging them to maintain their commitment to democratic and social values. Solidarity as a cross-cutting theme<\/p>\n

The monarch began his speech by recalling the devastating effects of the DANA that hit eastern and southern Spain two months ago. He paid tribute to the victims and highlighted the solidarity response of citizens, emergency teams and institutions. \u201cThe solidarity we have seen in these difficult times must be a guide to face any adversity,\u201d he said, stressing that this attitude exemplifies the true sense of the common good.<\/p>\n

Felipe VI also called on public administrations to work more effectively and in coordination in emergency situations, recognizing the frustrations and legitimate demands of those affected. \u201cIt is the responsibility of all institutions to ensure that the notion of the common good is reflected in any political speech or decision,\u201d he insisted.<\/p>\n

The European Union as an essential reference<\/strong><\/p>\n

At the international level, the King highlighted the importance of the European Union as a framework for facing global challenges and strengthening democratic values. \u00abEurope is and must continue to be an example of democracy, human rights and sustainable development\u00bb, he said, stressing that cooperation with European partners is essential to address issues such as immigration and the energy transition.<\/p>\n

Felipe VI stressed that the European spirit is an essential part of Spanish identity and the legacy that must be passed on to future generations. \u00abDefending the principles of liberal democracy and human rights with conviction and firmness is a shared obligation\u00bb, he declared.<\/p>\n

A message of hope for the future<\/strong><\/p>\n

The speech concluded with a message of optimism and confidence in Spain’s potential to overcome current challenges and build a better future. \u00abThe memory of the path taken, confidence in the present and hope for the future are an unavoidable part of our common good\u00bb, said the monarch.<\/p>\n
