The Spanish government has \u201cstrongly\u201d rejected on Wednesday the statements of the Israeli government in favour of the annexation of the West Bank.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has warned that \u201cannexation by force is contrary to International Law\u201d and has recalled that \u201cthe International Court of Justice has ruled that the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories is illegal and must end as soon as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe settlements are totally contrary to International Law, they make the two-state solution difficult and are an obstacle to peace,\u201d the statement continues. \u201cThese statements are inflammatory and hinder the necessary de-escalation of regional tension,\u201d it concludes.<\/p>\n

On Monday, Israeli Finance Minister, the far-right Bezalel Smotrich, declared during a meeting of the Religious Zionism party in the Israeli Knesset (Parliament) that 2025 will be the year of \u201cIsraeli sovereignty\u201d over the West Bank.<\/p>\n

In response to these words, the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs \u201cstrongly condemned the recent statements and calls by several Israeli leaders to impose what they call \u2018sovereignty\u2019 over the occupied West Bank,\u201d which represent \u201ca flagrantly colonial and racist extension of the ongoing campaign of extermination and forced displacement against the Palestinian people\u201d and demonstrate \u201ca flagrant disregard for international legitimacy and consensus, especially on the two-state solution.\u201d<\/p>\n

For his part, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, expressed his \u201cunequivocal condemnation\u201d of these words, which represent \u201ca clear step towards the illegal annexation\u201d of the occupied territory. \u201cThis rhetoric undermines international law, violates Palestinian rights and threatens the possibility of a two-state solution,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
