Casa de América and the Embassy of Uruguay present on Wednesday, October 23 at 18.30 in the Iberia room of the cultural house Ida Vitale (2023), a film written and directed by María Arrillaga about one of the greatest poets of Uruguay and Hispanic letters.

Ida Vitale’s work has been awarded numerous prizes, such as the Reina Sofía (2015), Federico García Lorca (2016), Max Jacob (2017), FIL Guadalajara Prize (2018), Miguel de Cervantes (2018) and National Grand Prize for Intellectual Work (2021).

Vitale was part of the Generation of 45, a movement of writers and artists in Uruguay that also included the grandparents of director María Arrillaga. This projection is part of the cycle dedicated to emblematic figures of Uruguayan culture inaugurated last month with Benedetti, 60 years with Luz.

Ida is the last representative of that generation [45’s] and condenses all family affection. Poetry can be the center of a life and is certainly the center of this documentary. “In Ida Vitale, the director says, I am interested in inviting an absolute fusion between poetry and reality, where the viewer will find beauty, humor and a playful, fresh look at the world, at life. A look of wonder that remains uneasy at 100″.

María Arrillaga (Uruguay, 1986), is a director, photographer and film-maker. His work shows a sensitivity oriented to the artistic and literary field and has been presented in galleries and museums of Brazil, Spain, the United States, Italy and Uruguay. His audiovisual works include Global Myopia (2015), co-curated with Marco Maggi and exhibited in galleries in Madrid, New York, San Francisco and Rio de Janeiro, and Heterotopia, inspired by the exhibition of Peter Halley at the 58th Venice Biennale. Ida Vitale is her debut.

Ana Teresa Ayala, Ambassador of Uruguay, will welcome the audience and present the film to producer Inés Vázquez. Free admission until the capacity of 70 seats is reached. Tickets will be distributed one hour before the start of the screening.
