The Madrid Press Association (APM) and the Federation of Associations of Journalists of Spain (FAPE) yesterday issued a statement expressing their “solidarity with journalists who are suffering repression by the Venezuelan government, following the elections held in that country on July 28.”
In their statement, the APM and the FAPE condemn the arrests of at least eight journalists by Venezuelan police forces in the days following the elections, according to data from the National Union of Press Workers of Venezuela. They also condemn the arrests of four other journalists carried out during the pre-election campaign.
These associations – adds the statement – demand the release of the informants and repudiate all the maneuvers carried out by the Nicolás Maduro regime against the media and its professionals that are contrary to the free exercise of journalism, a key element in a democratic society.”
