The Diplomat The mayor of Algeciras and senator of the PP, José Ignacio Landaluce, has asked the Government of Spain to know the actions that have been taken regarding the latest incident that occurred in the Spanish waters surrounding Gibraltar, and in which two vessels of the Maritime Service of the Civil Guard "were forced to leave the area by three units of the Royal Navy". In a note, the PP points out that the events occurred last Monday, August 19, when the crews of the British Navy were carrying out an exercise, close to the areas of the large landfills, which included the firing of blank ammunition, and that when the patrol boats of the Civil Guard approached, they "were surrounded and forced to leave the place". In this regard, Landaluce, who is the president of the Senate's Foreign Affairs Committee, considers "absolutely unjustifiable the harassment to which the Royal Navy has once again subjected Civil Guard vessels in Spanish waters near the colony of Gibraltar."For the popular leader, "it is extremely curious that every time a negotiation process is in the middle, the British Navy wants to make a show of force through exercises and maneuvers in waters that Spain continues to claim as its own." Based on this, he announces the presentation in the Upper House of a series of questions that aim to find out, among other aspects, whether the Government of Spain had been previously informed of the carrying out of these exercises by the United Kingdom, a partner in NATO, and whether the maneuvers had the support of other member states of the Atlantic Alliance. "We want to see if, through this parliamentary initiative, the Spanish Government is able to shed some light on this matter, the same light that needs to be shed on the negotiation of the post-Brexit agreement on Gibraltar, and about which little or nothing is known, despite the present and future of the Campo de Gibraltar region being at stake," explains Landaluce. The Popular Senator adds that they will also ask to know the initiatives that have been developed and whether or not there have been protests, as well as an assessment of the events that occurred.
