Spanish has become, along with English and French, the official language of the Hague Conference on Private International Law (HCCH), an international organization with 91 member states whose task is the homologation of the norms of private international law to global level.

“Spanish, the language that unites millions of people in Latin America and the world, is now the official language of the Hague Conference on Private International Law,” declared yesterday the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, to through the social network X. “The promotion of Spanish in international organizations is a priority of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” he added.

The decision to adopt Spanish as the official language was made in March 2023 by the members of the HCCH and the recognition ceremony took place yesterday, July 2, at the end of a meeting of the Special Commission on the practical operation of the Conventions on Notifications of 1965. The ceremony, organized with the support of the Spanish Government, was attended by representatives of the Governments of Spain and the States of Latin America and the Caribbean.

“The Permanent Office takes this opportunity to reiterate its gratitude to the members of the HCCH for their support of the adoption of Spanish as an official language and, in particular, to the members who have made voluntary contributions to support its implementation,” the organization stated in a press release.
