Author: Remigiusz Ryziński.

Next Wednesday, 26 June, at 7 p.m., at the Librería Antonio Machado in Círculo de Bellas Artes (calle Marqués de Casa Riera 2), there will be a presentation of the book Foucault en Varsovia, by Remigiusz Ryziński, recently published in Spain by Báltica Editorial with a translation by Katarzyna Olszewska.

The presentation will be attended by the Polish author, who will talk with the translator and Eva Orúe, journalist, writer and director of the Book Fair.

Foucault in Warsaw is a reportage that reveals the circumstances of the life of the gay community in communist Poland, investigating the mysterious stay of Michel Foucault in Warsaw in 1958-59.

In 1958, Michel Foucault arrives in Poland to take charge of the newly established Centre for French Culture at the University of Warsaw. Less than a year later, however, he is forced to leave Poland for a reason that is never made clear, but which seems to be linked to Foucault’s relationship with a young man used as an informer by the Polish secret police. This book explores and investigates the circumstances of the philosopher’s hasty return to France and offers a detailed picture of the life of the gay community in communist Poland.

Remigiusz Ryziński is a philosopher and writer. He works on gender and queer theories, history of philosophy and feminism. He has translated Umberto Eco, Jean-Paul Sartre and Julia Kristeva. Foucault in Warsaw was a finalist for the Nike Prize (the most important Polish literary prize) in the category of literary journalism; it has been translated into English and French, and a Japanese translation is currently being prepared.
