Cameroon’s Ambassador Paulin Godfried Yanga celebrated last Wednesday the 52nd anniversary of the National Unity Day, which he described as “of utmost importance” and which is celebrated every May 20.

“The celebration of this historic event, Paulin Godfried Yanga noted, sends us back to the referendum of May 20, 1972, when the people of Cameroon expressed themselves in favour of the creation of a unitary State under which we have been living ever since. Today, 22 May 2024, the Embassy of Cameroon in Madrid joins the national community to celebrate this event in the capital of Spain. Under the seal of the mobilisation of the whole nation behind His Excellency Paul Biya, President of the Republic and Chief of the Armies, this year this celebration appears as a suitable occasion for all the daughters and sons of Cameroon to support the valiant Defence forces, energetically dedicated to our homeland. For this reason, the theme of this year’s celebration is Nation Army for a united, peaceful and prosperous Cameroon.

Ambassador Paulin Godfried Yanga highlighted the role played by Spain during its independence process. “Spain, he said, was one of the first countries to establish diplomatic relations with Cameroon after our independence, thus becoming one of the first in the development of Cameroon. Since then, relations between Cameroon and Spain have developed and diversified in mutual respect and interest. Our desire has always been that these relations will be increasingly consolidated to the extent of the vast and rich potential for cooperation that exists between the two countries.”

The Cameroonian ambassador concluded by congratulating himself “on the magnificent and fruitful cooperation between Cameroon and the UN Tourism, to which I am accredited as permanent representative of my country, and we salute with firmness and gratitude the great missions and multiple actions that bring hope in a difficult international situation”.

The event was attended by the ambassadors of Mali, Congo, Tunisia, Morocco, Mozambique, Gambia, among others, together with Hana Jalloul, PSOE spokesperson for the Foreign Affairs Committee in the Congress of Deputies.
