Author: Vicente Piñeiro.
On 21 January, the Centro Sefarad-Israel presented the book Lola Touza, la Schindler gallega, by Vicente Piñeiro, in which it relates the history of Lola Touza, who received the Righteous among Nations Award and who is considered the Galician Schindler. She had a kiosk in the Rivadavia Station (Orense) and between 1941 and 1945, she decided to help more than 500 Jews to flee from certain death at the hands of Nazi collaborators, running one of the most important clandestine escape networks for Jews in Europe. This network established a route that crossed the Pyrenees, through Gerona, Medina del Campo, and Ribadavia, where they could cross into Portugal.
A tree planted in the Peres Center for Peace on a hill in Jerusalem, keeps alive the memory of Lola and her collaborators, and the more than 500 lives that were saved by her impetuous generosity.
