Spain, through the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), will contribute half a million euros to help victims of the floods in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul.

As announced this Friday by the agency in a press release, this contribution responds to the call issued by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) to address the humanitarian emergency situation in this area of Brazil.

The floods, caused by heavy rains since April 29, have affected 441 of the 496 municipalities in the state, as well as nearly 1.9 million people (more than 15% of the population of Rio Grande do Sul). As of May 10, almost 40,000 displaced people had been counted, 756 injured and 141 missing. Millions of people have lost access to basic services and infrastructure.

On May 11, the IFRC launched an emergency appeal for eight million Swiss francs to provide humanitarian assistance to communities affected by the devastating floods in Rio Grande do Sul.

Through this appeal, the IFRC will support 25,000 people who have lost their homes over the next twelve months. Assistance focuses on the shelter, health, and water, sanitation and hygiene sectors.

The IFRC is the world’s largest humanitarian network, made up of 192 National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, working to save lives, build community resilience, strengthen local action and promote dignity across the world. world.
