Antonio G. Limones, Vice-President of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee and Vice-President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, yesterday highlighted Spain’s contribution to culture in the European Union.

G. Limones, who is making this assessment as President of the Spanish Delegation to the 75th anniversary of the Council of Europe, recalled that Spain’s incorporation into the Council of Europe on 24 November 1977 is the “most important moment for Spain, because it is a unique case in the Council of Europe”.

In this respect, G. Limones explained that “Spain joined Europe without having approved its Constitution, under the promise that it would make a Constitution in accordance with the standards of the Treaty of London and the European Convention on Human Rights”.

“Since then”, he continued, “Spain is indebted to the Council of Europe and has contributed the best personalities to occupy the posts of Secretary General, President of the Assembly or Commissioner for Human Rights”.

“But Spain has also incorporated, in addition to these political values, cultural values. It was the country that initiated the cultural itineraries in Europe, starting with the Santiago de Compostela itinerary, and which has also shown that culture, not only politics, unites us”, he concluded.
