The Diplomat
Agustín Santos Maraver, deputy and diplomat, who was the great signing of Yolanda Díaz in the last general elections, voted yesterday against Spain suspending its diplomatic relations with Israel “for its genocide” of the Palestinian people, as requested by a proposition not of Podemos law, which had the support of Bildu, the BNG and Sumar himself.
Santos Maraver, who is Foreign Spokesperson for the Sumar Parliamentary Group, distanced himself from the support given by all his fellow members to the Podemos proposal, and voted in the same direction as PP, PSOE, Vox and the independence groups, who achieved that the initiative was not approved.
The appearance as ‘number two’ on Sumar’s lists of the person who until then was the ambassador, permanent representative of Spain to the United Nations in New York, was one of the surprises of the electoral campaign on July 23.
Sumar sources indicated that Agustín Santos’ position was agreed upon with the leadership of the formation, given the diplomat’s insistence on not signing that proposal because he understood that the best way to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza is to maintain diplomatic relations with Israel. , in order to be able to continue negotiating.
In any case, some of the parties that make up Sumar’s Parliamentary Group have not viewed the diplomat’s attitude favorably.
And from Podemos, which was the one who launched the non-law proposal, its leader, Ione Belarra, stated that the vote against cast by Agustín Santos “is valued on its own.”
The initiative of Podemos, whose deputies are part of the Mixed Group, advocated suspending the strategic partnership agreement between the EU and Israel and its seven points were voted on separately. Only the one relating to urging the Government to redouble its efforts to achieve the opening of safe corridors that allow the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza was successful. In this case, only Vox voted against.
Nor did the sections relating to the immediate suspension of Israel’s arms trade, a total arms embargo within the EU with this country, promoting sanctions within the EU against those responsible for war crimes and support for the investigation by the Prosecutor’s Office of the International Criminal Court, despite the fact that the PSOE has supported it with its affirmative vote. The independentistas of Junts aligned themselves with PP, Vox and UPN to overthrow them.
