Tomorrow Tuesday at 11.30 am, the Real Fábrica de Tapices (RFT) presents at its headquarters (Calle Fuenterrabía, 2) the book El léxico industrial de la seda en el siglo XVIII (The industrial lexicon of silk in the 18th century), published by it, with the collaboration of the Colegio del Arte Mayor de la Seda, and written by the academic Beatriz Sanz Alonso. It is the first vocabulary published on silk.
During the presentation, Alicia Enguídanos, an artisan from the Colegio del Arte Mayor de la Seda, will demonstrate the process of extracting silk thread by hand. The thread extracted from each cocoon can measure between 1,000 and 1,500 metres, approximately.
This dictionary has three fundamental contributions. The first is the description of the entire silk-making process, from the rearing of the worm to the dyeing, weaving and embroidering of the fabrics; the second is to explain, by documenting it, the whole lexicon of this process, and the third is to contextualise it in ethnography, anthropology and history.
