Based on the text of the play of the same name by Spanish Golden Age writer Lope de Vega, Teatro de la Zarzuela offers from 6 to 15 October the opera El caballero de Olmedo, composed by Arturo Díez Boscovich of Malaga.
This is the third world premiere of an opera in less than a year by the Teatro de la Zarzuela, all commissioned by the theatre itself from composers of very different backgrounds.
The Madrid coliseum has not hesitated to surround itself for the occasion with some of the most prominent names in our theatre, our music and beyond. Thus, to the musical direction of Maestro Guillermo García Calvo, who will occupy the orchestra pit at the head of the Orquesta de la Comunidad de Madrid (Titular del Teatro), joins the mastery of Lluís Pasqual, that man who lives and dreams theatre, who always did, who always will, and who on this occasion, in addition to devising the stage, has been in charge of the necessary adaptation of the text.
In this stage proposal, the director relies on the minimalist and effective set design by Daniel Bianco, the costumes by Franca Squarciapino, the lighting by Pascal Mérat, the choreography by Nuria Castejón, the video-scene by Franc Aleu and the fencing work by Jesús Esperanza.
There will also be two casts singing the three main roles of the opera, made up of tenors Joel Prieto and Juan de Dios Mateos, sopranos Rocío Pérez and Alba Chantar, baritones Germán Olvera and Ramiro Maturana, sopranos Nicola Beller Carbone and Berna Perles, baritone Gerardo Bullón and bass Rubén Amoretti. They will be accompanied by the Coro Titular del Teatro de la Zarzuela, as well as sixteen dancer-actors.
